Abstract

Reuse of vacant office buildings represents an increasingly common practice in many cities worldwide. There are numerous examnples of successful reuse, but on the other hand there are examples of reactivation attempts which were not realized even with significant investments. The reasons for unsuccessful attempts are usually found in the lack of understanding and analysis of the many different aspects within the complex adaptation process. In cases involving large buildings, and especially regarding abandoned office buildings, conversion with the aim of reuse is often a better solution than demolishion and construction of a new building on the same site. In order to realize a successful conversion, an adequate choise of a new building purpose is one of the most crucial initial steps. The presented research, regarding the most significant spatial characteristics of buildings according to their typology, was done in order to establish which typologies are "spatially compatible" and thus determine the appropriate new purposes for vacant buildings.
